About Marcel Walldorf

Marcel Walldorf (b. 1983 in Friedberg / Hessen, Germany) is a sculptor based in Frankfurt am Main. He studied at Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main and Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden, where he received his Diploma in Sculpture and was Meisterschüler of Eberhard Bosslet.

Walldorf has taught at several art academies and universities, including Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden and Kunsthochschule Mainz. He is currently Visiting Professor for Art and Social Space at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

He lives and works in Frankfurt am Main and is co-founder of the artist-run exhibition platform MARS e.V. Frankfurt.

Artist statement

Marcel Walldorf’s art doesn’t shy away from puns and spares no sensitivities – least of all his own. He enjoys wordplay and absurd visual metaphors, especially when dealing with serious subjects. Behind the surface humor lies a deeper melancholy: a sharp eye for the fault lines and fractures of society, and a precise sculptural language that combines conceptual clarity with a keen attention to detail. Walldorf has no interest in making art that only artists understand – his concern is social relevance beyond the art world.

In his artistic practice, he condenses social observations into narrative sculptures that are both accessible and layered. For him, humor and irony are not a softening, but the sharpest tools for exposing contradictions and double standards. His works engage themes that are firmly rooted in the present while pointing beyond the moment.

A central motif in his work is the depiction of animals. Like in a fairy tale, domestic and farm animals serve as stand-ins: they create emotional proximity, mirror human traits and contradictions – and make the uncomfortable tangible before one has the chance to look away. At their best, they spark social debates and resonate far beyond the art world.
